England
Dear Laura,
I felt like writing this evening and couldn’t think of anyone better to write to. Of course I didn’t try to think too hard, it hurts my head. Well, anyhow, I decided to drop you a line.
I went to London last Wednesday on a 48 hour pass. I had a pretty good time even though I didn’t get around too much. It sure is a hard place to find your way around and it doesn’t do any good to ask an English man for directions as he doesn’t know anything about it and will always send you the wrong way instead of admitting he doesn’t know. If the cab drivers know the place they won’t admit it and if you tell them where it is, they go through Hyde Park anyhow just on General principal, even if they have to go four miles out of their way to do it.
The best way to get around is the underground and it takes a while to learn the stops and changes on that. It’s as fast as a cab would be but a lot cheaper. I spent most of my time just looking around so I’d know a little about the town if I decided to spend my seven day leave there the last of the month.
Is Ruth still staying there? Tell her I said hello if she is. I’ll bet you girls raise Mary hell. Wish I could be there to brace one corner up, save raising it next time.
I made myself about 70 bucks in a craps game this afternoon. Not a bad 10 minutes work. Puts me a little ahead in the game now, hope I stay that way. Write soon.
Just me,
Smithy
