Dear Mom,
I got back from London this afternoon. I went up there Wednesday afternoon on a 48 hour pass. I was rather lucky to go with a fellow who had been there several times and knows his way around fairly well. It’s the hardest town to get to any certain part of it that I ever saw. The underground (subways) are the best way and pretty cheap. I only spent L9 (about $36) and had a good time. I got acquainted with some people who are in a position to help me out if I happen to run out of places to go and things to do while in town.
When I got back the fellows told me there was a package from my mother and four letters on my bed. I found the letters OK but the package wasn’t there. I thought they might have been kidding me and they thought at first that I had put it away and was kidding them. We finally figured out that we were all right; there had been one but I didn’t get it. Sergeant Mitchell told me to search every bag etc. in the place which I did without result.
Bob Green and I went over to the tent behind our hut and ask about it there. A couple of their fellows have been caught in our hut and explained that they were looking for a broom. I told the Lt. there that if we ever caught any of their fellows in here again it wasn’t even going to be reported, they’d just be hurtin’. I know the rest of the section felt the same but it didn’t get my package back.
I’d just as soon lose the package, now if I could only get my hands on the guy that took it. I reckon it’d be worth it and I’ve got plenty of help if I need it.
Our lights went out just before I started writing so I’ve got a candle parked in the corner of my writing board. It’s just about as good as these electric lights, here, even when they’re working.
I wrote to Joe a few days ago to let him know I was to get my furlough about the 25th and to see if he could get his at the same time. I may try to go over there this next weekend.
I haven’t received the letter Wanda sent the stamps in tho’ I got an airmail that she mentioned it in. I think one of your letters has failed to get through too, and I know of several more that people have sent and I never received. I wonder if you get all of my letters. I guess we’ll have to start numbering them to really find out.
Well, this is all for now.
Love to All, Wayne
