Dear Sis,
I got your letter today and had better answer it now; it’ll help keep me out of the craps game going on right beside me.
I was paid yesterday, got $231.78 in a wad. I got into a little no-limit stud game last night and lost the extra 30 bucks which wasn’t bad considering the size of the game. Six of us were playing, and the pots were anywhere from $10-$100 apiece for about five hours. A nice game, especially for the guy that’s “hot”.
I got a nice letter from Betty yesterday and answered it last night. I think she and I are going to get along. She writes along interesting letters.
Got a letter from Fern the other day. She misunderstood a couple of sentences I wrote and was kind of peeved. I wrote back and explained so I reckon it’ll be OK. I get a kick out of these damn fool girls that can’t read plain English correctly. It tickles me to see what catty things they can think of when they’re mad, a human nature study.
Ruth was mad because I agreed with things she had already said about herself, and expected me to agree that she was OK anyhow. You know how a woman is, she can say things about herself but gets mad if someone else says the same thing. I didn’t answer her letter and haven’t sent the pictures back. I think it’ll hurt her more if I don’t pay attention to her than it would give her hell, and I wouldn’t try to make up for the world, though I still think a lot of her. I’m stubborn sometimes.
Bernard Shaw says that “The worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them, that’s the essence of inhumanity”, but then I always was a “mean little kid “.
We had a showdown inspection at 6 PM. We had to lay out everything we had, polish shoes, clean rifles, etc. in an hour, and boy were we busy. I had to go to the dispensary and get a shot for typhoid and one of tetanus at 6:30 so they inspected my stuff while I was gone.
I have enough cash to send you about $160 but I haven’t any way to send it unless I send it to town and have it wired up. I may be able to get some money order blanks in a day or so though.
we haven’t been too busy this week, just enough to keep doing something, but taking our time doing it. My favorite speed.
Well, I haven’t written to Alice for over a week so I better do it now.
Love,
Wayne.
