Dear Sis,
I got your Valentine and letter this noon, that is a very nice Valentine, perfume and all. Also got a valentine from Doris Jones. I got a letter from her yesterday.
Your grades were good but I knew they would be. I got a letter from mom yesterday and she told me you only had one B. I showed several of the fellows the report and they all said that you weren’t in their class.
Thanks for the info on that Butler gal. I reckon maybe I’ll drop her a line tomorrow if I get around to it. I got to make connections somewhere in case I ever get home again.
Don’t ask me what “Currahee” means, I don’t know and I don’t give a damn. I guess that “Geronimo” was too common for this outfit and they had to dig up something different.
I don’t know how popular Alice feels; I haven’t heard from her yet. Maybe she was so over calm that she hasn’t been able to write sense.
I wrote to Peg the 6th according to my diary so I imagine she knew my address not long after she wrote to you.
Mom didn’t say anything about the pictures. I’m glad they turned out good. I imagine one of those of Joe and I would tickle him if you would get some re-prints. I’d like some of those of myself if they’re any good.
I signed the payroll today for $180 but I read it over and I bet a dollar that I get “redlined “ (name crossed out because of a mistake etc.) for this month. They had left one partial pay deduction out, but I didn’t say anything about it.
I’ve been closing reserve packs today. Another fellow and I closed 34 and both of us have sore fingers from drawing in the cord to pull the flaps into place for fastening. That silk cord is a “bitch” to pull on and we really had to pull. A third fellow packed (folded and stowed suspension lines) all of them.
We finished at 3:00, got the place cleaned up and got off at 4 instead of 5:30. 26 of us packed 300 reserves today. Plenty fast.
Yesterday I unpacked new chutes from cartons and carried them to the tables for packing. I had to put the paper they were wrapped in into boxes and split and fold the good cardboard. They really kept me busy; I carried over 200 of each type. Last night most of us went down to the sheds from 7:00 until 10:30 to pack reserves so we could get off early today. Some of the fellows wanted to go out for the weekend so we all pitched in to get the job done. We finished about 140 last night. We’ve packed 1000 chutes in the past 5 days and only 18 were at it at a time (average).
Well, my arm and hand is too tired to try writing another page so I’ll call this good.
Love, Wayne
