Ft. Indiantown Gap, PA
Dear Mom,
Well, we’re back in “the gap” now and boy does it seem nice to sleep in beds, (sheets too) have warm rooms and warm water for showers and shaving, eating off plates that you can set on a table.
I got your letter this morning, also the card addressed Ft Bragg. I got the cakes all right and had plenty of help eating them. The boys had a fit about my getting two cakes in a row, they were both good.
I gather from your letter that you are rather worried about the Jap. situation. We listen to the radio and read the papers and all that but it doesn’t mean much.
They are clamping down on guards, etc. around camp, using live ammo and their guns. The guard is tripled and regulations about passes a little stricter. Visitors have to have a reason to see a person or they are not allowed in camp.
All this doesn’t bother us too much as we can still get passes and there has been no orders about taking away furloughs. I intend to be home Wednesday sometime. Lester has started home this afternoon for the car. He got a pass from noon till midnight. I could have too but have no reason to, as I wouldn’t have time to get home. I had to work a little longer hauling laundry.
I sent my clothes to the laundry this time. I had too many to bring home and it won’t cost me but $1.50 a month.
We had a nice trip up though it was a little cold for the boys in back. I am kind of sorry about Christmas. I won’t be able to get much for the kids unless I get that little out of the bank. I had intended to have more but it didn’t work out.
Last weekend in N.C. my generator quit working and I took the truck to the Service Co. They thought it was the volt relay so monkeying with it. They couldn’t fix it so sent it to the quartermaster‘s. Lt Knotts (regimental motor officer) claimed I had monkeyed with it before and tried to make me pay $75 for a new relay etc.
I told him to go to hell so we had quite a time over it. I had witnesses, fellows who were with me when I took the truck to the Service Co. I also found a receipt for the work done by the quartermasters, which was under the seat, but none of the others knew it. I could prove it was the Service Co. so they got awful nice and said it was OK. Damn good thing they did as I wouldn’t have monkeyed around long, as mad as I was, before I had that outfit in hot water. I just happened to have the breaks on my end, along with a little putting 2 x 2 = 4 into affect.
Well, I guess I’ll close for now, hoping everything‘s OK. Don’t worry about us as most of that stuff is hooie.
Love to all,
Wayne
