Dear Mom,
By the time I get the heading on a sheet of paper it already looks like half the letter (probably is).

I’m using Leland’s guitar case propped up on one end with a toolbox, I have a kerosene lantern sitting on the end of the Pepsi cola case for a light, and “Shorty’s” (Raymond Seward, another truck driver) bunk for a swivel chair, only part of me is in the swivel.

I got your letter and one from Peg several days ago, but haven’t had time to write. I haven’t heard from Ruth yet and haven’t written to her since three weeks ago, this Sunday. I don’t give a damn now whether she writes or not.
I haven’t been out of camp “on my own” but once since I’ve been down here. I went to Waynesboro one night the first week, but since then I’ve been on guard or some thing or else just didn’t feel like going out weekend which is the only chance we get now.

I am in line to get guard duty tomorrow (Fri) night so I won’t be able to go anywhere Saturday and probably won’t feel like going anywhere Saturday night, which I could, though I’d like to go to Waynesboro to buy some gloves, sweatshirt, etc.

We have our usual Saturday inspection (I have to stand both showdown and motor) tomorrow and as we get paid Saturday morning and are free right afterwards until Sunday noon, that is anyone not on guard.

I’m using my old pen as I loaned my new one to another fellow and I can’t find him now. This thing hasn’t been used for two months and the ink had dried in it. I just had to stop and clean it, you can tell the difference in the writing.

The big army maneuver starts Sunday at six and will last at least two weeks, maybe a month for all we know now. We have been having Brigade, Division, and Corp maneuvers so far and have won all up to now. We won’t have any more weekends off after this one, I guess, but time passes faster out in the field where there is something to do than it does in camp lying around.

Well, my hand and arm is pretty tired now so I guess I’ll close, hoping all are well. Tell them hello from Wayne.
Love, Wayne

P. S. Allen Drew was over last weekend from Fort Bragg where he is stationed. Had quite a talk with him.
